Monolith

A mechanical EVA/IVA toolwatch developed over six years to work in vacuum, on a spacewalk, and underwater. Barrelhand's argument is that a watch for space has to be purely mechanical — no electronics to be flipped by radiation — and light enough that its mass is worth the launch cost. The whole watch comes to 31 g.

Components are tested against the EVA/IVA protocols established in the Apollo era, with materials and processes chosen against ISO aerospace standards and NASA material guidance.

Chassis

  • 3D-printed Scalmalloy (a scandium-magnesium aluminium alloy), type-II anodised
  • "Aircore" internal insulation chamber — Barrelhand claims roughly 10× the thermal insulation of an equivalent solid steel case
  • 6.5 g chassis; 38 × 45 × 11.8 mm, 20 mm lug width
  • Printed in collaboration with Materialise and APWORKS

Dial and window

  • Monolithic Aerolight X2 ceramic layered with machined brass, laser-welded, no paint or adhesive
  • Claimed 4× the brightness of silk-screened C3-X1 lume after an hour
  • Counterbalanced seconds hand
  • Lab-optic C-plane sapphire crystal with MgF2 anti-reflective coating, suspended on a Hytrel L-ring
  • Dial collaborators: Swiss Super-LumiNova, Black Badger, HGH Concept, Les Cadraniers de Genève

Movement — "M1 Engine"

  • Built on the Swiss Sellita SW300-1b, upgraded and regulated by Barrelhand to ±6 s/day
  • Automatic, bidirectional; 50-hour power reserve; 4 Hz (28,800 vph)
  • Glucydur balance, Nivarox hairspring, Nivaflex mainspring, nickel-phosphorous escape wheel and pallet fork
  • Antimagnetic to ISO 764 / DIN 8309 (4,800 A/m); Chronofiable A8 tested
  • Shock-isolating engine mount with 0.3 mm travel in all axes, rated to 3,000 g

Crown and caseback

  • 8 mm "Airlock" crown sized for gloved operation, windable and settable in vacuum or underwater, International Orange anodised
  • 7075 aluminium caseback on A4 steel torx screws, chosen for compatibility with ISS servicing tool sets
  • Gasket seals in a composite similar to ISS airlock systems
  • Houses the Memory Disc: a 19 mm, 1.2 mm, 1.4 g NanoFiche archive holding ~3 GB, read optically, with content including 286 UNESCO preamble translations, the full text of Le Petit Prince, and a waveform contributed by Aphex Twin

Strap

  • Dual-mode EVA/IVA webbing that switches between suit-over and bare-wrist wear without tools
  • Polyester elastic, UV-resistant, waterproof, freeze-proof
  • Grade-5 titanium micro-adjustable G-hook, by Nick Mankey Designs
  • Three colours: Barrelhand Orange, Black, Black with Orange Stripe

Operating limits

  • Pressure: 0 ATM (vacuum) to 20 ATM (200 m)
  • Temperature: −120 °C to +120 °C in vacuum
  • Shock: 3,000 g
